Ethiopia: More Than 40 Former METEC Officials Detained
November 10, 2018 (Ezega)- More than 40 former officials of the Metals and Engineering Corporation (METEC) and members of intelligence community have been detained, according to the Reporter.
METEC management and members of intelligence forces were detained yesterday, November 9, 2018, the report discloses.
The Ethiopian government government has so far not disclosed whether anyone is detained from METEC, much less who these former METEC officials were.
They were taken into custody while they were meeting in the Gerji area in Addis Ababa, in the former Imperial Hotel which the Corporation bought and renamed the Amoraw Building, according to sources.

They are believed to be in custody at the Federal Police’s temporary detention center, according to sources.
METEC has been in hot waters for some time for what current government officials believe was deep in corruption and mismanagement.
In August this year, METEC was terminated from the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) project for delay and mismanagement it caused, according to government officials. Read here for that METEC story.
The Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed himself singled out for criticism, saying it was not only the primary factor for GERD project delays, but also caused Salini Impregilo, the Italian company which is the main contractor for GERD, to demand compensation for the delays.
In October this year, and perhaps in an effort to rehabilitate its name, the military-controlled industrial enterprise METEC announced it was going to be reorganized.
In addition to the pending reorganization, METEC also changed its name to National Metal Engineering Corporation (NMEC), pending government approval.
Brigadier General Kinfe Dagnaw, who led the corporation as director until he resigned in April 2018 following Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed election as prime minister within the ruling party, was recently in the media defending METEC.
